Mission, Vision and Values

Advancing Our Legacy of Health

19th century merchant and banker, Moses Taylor, donated $250,000 to build a hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania to benefit iron and coal workers and workers of the DL&W Railroad.  Moses Taylor Hospital opened October 1, 1892, operating as a nonprofit health system on Quincy Avenue in Scranton’s Hill section, dedicated to treating injured miners and railroaders.  A few years later, the hospital also began treating workers’ families, and eventually expanded its mission to serve the broader community as well.

January 1, 2012 – 120 years after opening its doors – Moses Taylor Health Care System and its assets were sold to Community Health Systems of Franklin, Tennessee.  The net proceeds from the sale accrued to the Moses Taylor Foundation to be a catalyst in continuing the philanthropic legacy of Moses Taylor to promote the health and wellbeing of the people of Northeast Pennsylvania, particularly the most vulnerable.
